Pellegrino Seismic Base Isolation Protects HALL Wines

The 2014 earthquake on the West Napa Fault caused estimated damage in excess of $300 million, much of it sustained by the region’s 500 winemakers. In the aftermath of the 6.0-magnitude earthquake, HALL Wines identified a need for additional seismic protection to safeguard its valuable and irreplaceable vintage-wine inventory.

The HALL Wines Solution

HALL Wines reviewed its requirements with Joe Gangemi of Material Handling Design & Equipment and decided to install Pellegrino Base Isolators throughout the new facility. The isolators fit neatly beneath the rack’s upright frames, are nearly undetectable in daily operation, and do not interfere with lift trucks moving in and around the rack.

HALL’s warehouse stores cases of bottled wines for both short- and long-term storage. From the facility, Cisneros’ team packs direct-to-consumer Wine Club orders daily and stores the winemaker’s library wines on pallet rack, potentially for years.

The warehouse included more than 500 pallet positions of RIDG-U-RAK Tear Drop pallet rack, with nearly 100 base isolators installed with the upright frames.

Pellegrino Base Isolators dissipate up to 85% of seismic energy. RIDG-U-RAK conducted more than 100 earthquake simulations with varying loads, product configurations, and base arrangements during five weeks of testing at the Structural Engineering Earthquake Simulation Laboratory at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

The isolators provide another level of rack protection while preserving normal warehouse operation and lift-truck access.
